Dayang Atul – 2018 might just be year of the olive

Work has taken up a lot of my time and whenever I’m free, I’d be busy planning for my engagement and wedding. Yes, I am getting married – to one of my best friends of 10 years too. I didn’t see this coming at all, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I came back to Malaysia a couple weeks back from Europe – it was for work, of course, not a vacation…..as a matter of fact I can’t even remember the last time I had a proper holiday. My schedule has been so packed – not that I’m complaining.

Being occupied with work and all these engagement/wedding plannings, of course I have to take extra care of my skin if I want to look good on television and on my big day. Before this I had a regiment already but I guess because I am getting older and my skin condition keeps changing due to my age and hormones (let me add stress levels too), my routine has changed to cater to my skin’s needs. I’m 27 this year and I am still trying to figure what product would best fit my skin. It’s not that I started caring about my skin later than most girls but because when I was younger, my skin was clear. As in – I really didn’t have a problem with it? Then again what were the stresses a teenager could’ve faced that was more serious than the issues we currently have to deal with as adults, right?

I’m sure you’ve heard of Mario Badescu. The products that the brand offers are so good. Actually good is an understatement – the products that they have are amazing! The only downside though, is they are so mahal. I used to have their whole set because I’m the type of person who sticks to just one brand at a time. It started when I moved to Malaysia… been spending most of my life here rather than in my own country, Indonesia, since I was 9 years old up until now where I’m 21 years old and have just gotten my bachelor degree in Culinary Arts from Taylor’s University. I just completed my final internship at Nobu KL and am currently on the search for that perfect first job. I’ve basically been in love with art and music since high school, I always got the best marks in school for those subjects compared to others.

What’s In My Bag: Batrisyia Razak

We’ll start with the exciting stuff, which is what’s in my makeup bag. I always bring my MAC Studio Sculpt Defining Powder in the shade Medium Deep. It’s a powder foundation, for touching up like when I’m sweaty and stuff. I apply it with my Bobbi Brown Powder Foundation Brush. I also carry a MAC Blush in the shade Swiss Chocolate, because blusher fades away quickly so you need to reapply. This kind of looks like I contour my face with it actually. I’ll apply this with an Estee Lauder Blusher Brush.

Amzar Nizam, Public Relations Manager

Before I got into PR, I worked for an advertising agency…and just so you know it was kind of boring! I just could not imagine myself doing it for the rest of my life so I then took on another job in Public Relations. PR is really different – I attend events, I meet people and I travel a lot. Currently, I work in a media agency where I am in charge of not only their PR but also their creative industry portal. It gets me quite busy most of the time but hey, I honestly do enjoy it!

Because my job requires me to meet a lot of people, looking good is always a must. Not saying that everyone in this line of work looks like Brad Pitt, but the first impression is so important when meeting potential clients – you not only need to have good communication skills, but appearance-wise, that plays a major role too.

Gesty Smith, Graphic designer

How I started wearing makeup is funny. I was around 13 in secondary school— SMK Seafield, by the way!— where I was known as the rebel who wore makeup to school. The headmistress knew this, and she would always call me to come see her everyday to make sure I wasn’t wearing any makeup. Well, I got around that by making sure that I always packed my makeup to school and after I’d already met her, I’d just go to the bathroom and put it on. Before that I was a really tomboyish kid who wore jeans and had short hair and all that. I was kind of handsome back then, actually!

These days I work as a graphic designer, mostly designing logos and branding. I’ve done work for SHALS, designing their website and anything else where they might need help with graphic design. I’ve also been a teacher, where I was with an international language programme for two years and I did tutoring on the side. And I’ve also done some modelling on the side— mainly TVCs and clothing lines, a bit of runway but not so much. My hobbies tend towards the artistic side of things, though. Besides graphic design, I do like to indulge myself in music and painting.

What’s In My Raya Bag?

” I’m pretty basic when it comes to whatever I carry around in my handbag. I avoid as much as possible from having to carry a heavy load. I’m lazy like that. For Raya, nothing much changes in there – even the necessities for makeup touch ups. I’d have already prepped my face with primers or prepping sprays that work well with my skin before leaving the house when I wear makeup anyway, so heavy touch ups when I’m outside aren’t that necessary.

A Quick One, While It’s Eid

Today marks the first day of Eid-ul-fitr for 2016 (or more commonly known as ‘Aidilfitri’ in Malaysia… or just ‘Raya’!). The first few days of Raya will usually be spent with the immediate family, but after a couple of days that’s when we’ll start to see the onslaught of open houses left and right.

Raya is supposed to be all about spending time with loved ones and feeling grateful for what we already have, but… you know, what’s a major holiday without a little bit of consumerism? At least today we’ll be supporting local– meet Lilin + Co scented soy candles!

Po, Cat

The first thing I do when I get up in the morning is work out. I’m very into cardio, so I run laps around the house until I’ve burnt up enough calories. I like to call my workout ‘organic jogging’, because I don’t follow any particular route— just wherever my legs take me. Organically. So if something ends up in front of me, I just knock it over. Actually, knocking things over helps to build up leg muscle. I’m very proud of my legs.

When I’m done with my workout, I like to take a short rest. Resting and self care is very important to me, because as a cat I face a lot of stress in my life therefore it’s crucial that I take good care of myself to ensure my mental health and emotional wellbeing is at tiptop levels. My favourite way to unwind is to cuddle up in a corner with some aromatherapy fragrances. The best fragrance, to me, is the smell of my own farts. It’s so relaxing, and it’s organic. My humans are not into the smell, though. They’re too used to the smell of chemicals. I’ve tried to teach them that natural and organic is better, but they just don’t get it. I guess that is why they are humans and not cats. Cats know better, which is why you don’t see cats burning up forests and fossil fuels.

I’ve been asked a lot on why I always have short hair – well, why wouldn’t I? Every other girl in the world seems to have long hair! I’m kidding, it’s simply because short hair is so much easier to manage especially when you’re always travelling like me. With short hair, I don’t have to worry about it too much – none of those time consuming routines that I honestly would be too lazy to do! I like to think of myself as a very practical girl. The simpler the better, and that’s exactly how my approach for beauty and skincare is as well.

I keep it as basic as I could with my skincare regime. When I’m taking my makeup off after work or after a shoot, I first take it off with the Cleansing Facial Wipes by Simple. I love this product, it takes everything off so easily and gently. After everything is all off, I wash my face with the Purity One-Step Facial Cleanser by Philosophy. This facial cleanser does the job perfectly – it cleanses well and doesn’t sting my face or make it feel tegang which I don’t like.
