Conceal don’t feel, don’t let them know

Picking the right kind of concealer for your skin type can be quite a drag, especially if you don’t know what exactly you are searching for.

A prime example would be me, when I used to think concealer was just an excuse for makeup stores and brands to make more money since it’s the exact same thing as foundation.

What’s the point of wearing concealer if I have a good foundation? my naïve, younger self would say.

A-ha! That’s what you might also think, but please please please understand that foundation does not equal to concealer. If you think you can simply dab on foundation under your eyes to cover those dark circles – it won’t. If you think you can easily layer your face with a second coat of foundation to cover those blemishes, you’ll look like pancake with extra tepung.

Do you want to remind everyone of tea time? If yes, whatever rocks your boat, Miss Pillsbury. If your answer is no, congratulations – we can be the best of friends. So let’s get chatting about concealer. A question that I have actually been asked before in regards to the subject matter is, if concealer is meant to cover up better than foundation, then why don’t we just wear concealer as foundation?

I guess you could do that. It’s not like it’s actually impossible or anything, but it’s more like— why would you? Concealers tend to be thicker and gloopier than foundation. It’s just not something you would want to wear all over your face, especially in a climate like that of our beloved nation. Have you ever been to a clothing store and wanted to try out a cute outfit only to find it smeared with streaks of beige? Those are the people who wear concealer all over that face. Be smart. Don’t be that person!

So now that we’ve got that out of the way, here are my suggestions for some nice and affordable concealers for the concealer newbie (or anyone who wants some new recs). I guess we could talk about Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage but, well, everyone else already has.

  • Wet ‘n’ Wild Cover All Concealer Palette

This concealer is a total steal, for me. Bang for your buck. You don’t only get a concealer (which is the beige shade in the picture above), but also a green colour corrector, a cream highlighter and a brightener for your dark circles! It’s Wet ’n’ Wild, so it’s obviously not going to be the BEST at the aforementioned but to be honest, it’s pretty good! My personal favourite is the green colour corrector— smear it over any redness you’ve got then cover it up with the concealer.

  •  Collection Lasting Perfection Ultimate Concealer

Easily one of the best drugstore concealers I’ve ever used. British beauty bloggers may get paid to shill a ton of stuff, but they’re being honest about this one. I might just call this my current favourite, in all honesty. It is so creamy and pigmented, without leaving my under eyes feeling thick and cakey. Do you know how hard it is to find a concealer which is super ultra fragilistic high coverage yet isn’t cakey at all, whether you apply it with a brush, a damp sponge, your hands or your feet? Unfortunately, it looks as if Collection is slowly being phased out of Malaysia as we speak… The biggest tragedy this beautiful nation has ever seen, if you ask me.

  • Catrice All-Round Concealer

I found out about this brand when I was curating @twt_makeupmy. It was being suggested for literally everything! “Sis, ada suggestion for foundation?” “Try Catrice.” “Sis, ada suggestion for mentega?” “Try Catrice.” So when I actually spotted this brand at the brand spankin-new Guardian at Empire Subang, I was like… “sis”. And I was shocked by how affordable everything was! So of course I had to haul, this was one of them. Like the Wet ‘n’ Wild Cover All, this too comes with colour correctors. Green is for correcting redness whereas the sort of peachy, orangey cream is for correcting any darkness under your eyes. One problem that I have with this is that it isn’t as creamy as I’d like it to be. It feels sort of powdery, and I’m not a fan of that. But for its cheap price, I think it works pretty well.

  • Catrice Light Reflecting Concealer

I don’t use this to exactly conceal blemishes but I really love it as a highlighting concealer for my under eyes. Sort of like YSL Touche Eclat for those whose wallets are on a  diet. I used to use the Collection Illuminating Touch Concealer but because it is no longer available in Malaysia, this is a very good substitute and is in the same price range. Put some on the higher points of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, the centre of your forehead and your cupid’s bow – you’ll notice that your face will look instantly brighter.

  • NYX Above & Beyond Full Coverage Concealer

Although it doesn’t claim to be able to colour correct, its orangey hue is perfect for dark circles. It has a very creamy consistency and slides easily on the skin. However, it does crease. I have fine lines under my eyes and this concealer has a tendency to settle in them. I’m sure you know what I mean. To counter that, I wear this over some primer and that solves the problem.

  • Cyber Colors Protection Concealer Kit

Among everything mentioned in this list, trust me, this would be the best of them all. Beautifully packed (I like it being simple this way) and comes in three shades. If having three different colours is too much for you, you can also buy a single kit instead. Extremely creamy, amazingly stays on. If you have extra dough to spare, give this one a try.
